First Sunday of Lent

The Gospel readings for our first Sunday in Lent show us how even Jesus is tempted. Jesus spent 40 days in the desert, fasting, praying and being tempted by the devil, however he didn’t cave or falter, not even once. Throughout our Lenten journey my hope is for you to recognize those moments of temptation and to use those opportunities for spiritual growth. The more we resist temptation, the more we open ourselves to spiritual development and a deeper connection with God.

As we look ahead at our Lenten journey, it’s easy to become discouraged, especially when we perceive the challenges, we’ve set for ourselves as overwhelming. Yet, it is in these moments of difficulty that we are called to turn to Jesus; to follow the path He has laid before us. May these moments draw you closer to God and deepen your reflection on both your own life and the world around you. Rather than viewing this season as a time of sacrifice and loss, consider how the things you give up can actually create space for greater focus on growing your relationship with Jesus Christ. Lent is not a time for burden, but an opportunity for renewal, repentance, and reflection—so that we may grow spiritually and experience God’s presence more fully, especially when life’s distractions seem to crowd out His voice.

Over the next 40 days, my hope for you is that you find joy in this season of spiritual renewal. When challenges arise, lean on Jesus Christ. Look to him for guidance through your toughest moments of each day. I hope His love is truly made apparent to you in this sacrificial season and that you come to the Easter season, proud of the person you became over the last 40 days; restored, renewed and fulfilled by His love.
