Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
When a child has a bad dream, they run to their parents’ room, fling open the door, and wake them up, hoping for comfort. The disciples do something similar in this week’s gospel. Jesus is asleep in the boat during a big storm. His disciples wake him up and ask, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” This small example of faith is a beautiful example for our relationships with God.
First, it is a reminder to fully trust that God can truly do anything! The disciples believed in Jesus’ ability to protect them physically. Do we trust that God can step in and save us spiritually and physically?
Second, it shows the closeness of Jesus and his disciples. They felt comfortable to approach him with their worries. Do we believe that God cares about our concerns, no matter how big or small?
Let the disciples’ confidence in and familiarity with Jesus inspire us this week.
