Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
“As for me and my household, I shall serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15b
“Show me your calendar and your bank statement, and I will tell you who you serve.” ~ several persons
Various sources suggest that the average adult makes 35,000 decisions each day and estimate that around 227 of those are on food alone. That’s a lot of decisions! Scripture implies that this is not a new thing. People have been making decisions since the beginning… remember the fruit (Genesis 3:6)?! All of our decisions have consequences leading to other decisions that eventually define us, what we believe.
We see this in Sunday’s first reading: Joshua pushes the Israelites to make a decision, “decide today whom you will serve.” After reflecting on their lives, freedom from slavery, the miracles, the protection received they respond, “how can we serve anyone but the Lord?”
Thousands of years later, we are faced with the same question. Who do you choose to serve? We too can reflect on the thousands of years of the faithfulness of God to all people, including the Sacrifice of His Only Son, Jesus for our salvation. Hopefully, we can look at our own lives and see even the tiny ways that God has brought us through difficult times, protected us, and provided for us.
The impact of your decision here is a BIG one. This decision not only affects you, but your children and the people around you. This decision not only affects your day to day, but your eternity. Don’t make it alone. God, out of love, has given us the Spirit and the Church to lead us in faith.
